My first aerial yoga class was a disaster… for my ego. 😂
It had been four years since I’d done any kind of workout. I was swamped taking care of my twin babies and struggling to find time to even sit down for a proper meal, let alone go out and exercise. So “out of shape” couldn’t have been more accurate.
I arrived at the studio knowing it was going to be a struggle, but I didn’t realize just how much. I thought I could just use the hammock for support, not realizing that I actually needed grip strength to hold onto it.
The instructor was incredibly kind. He could tell I had some flexibility but zero strength, so he supported me when my muscles basically laughed in my face. Even though I couldn’t do much on the hammock, I had a blast and felt safe and supported.
The highlight for me was when the class was asked to climb up from an invert into a pose we now call “diaper,” basically a double thigh lock. I couldn’t even use my abs to curl up and grab the hammock from the invert, let alone climb all the way up. 😂 My instructor had to push me the entire way. Poor guy.
But that’s what sparked my determination. I wanted to be able to do that on my own one day.
It took a few more months before my life shifted in a way that let me train every week, but I’ll never forget that first class. I don’t think the instructor is online, but… thank you, MM. To this day, when I help a new student climb into a diaper wrap, I’m reminded of how kind you were.
